H.E. General Surasak Kanchanarat, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment of Thailand along with entourage had a bilateral conference with H.E. Mr.Sommad Pholsena, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment of Lao PDR on April 4, 2018, at Champa Hall, Sokha Siem Reap Resort & Convention Center in Siem Reap, Kingdom of Cambodia.
The two consulted on critical issues including 1) the establishment of an arboretum and learning center to enhance conservational consciousness and environmental protection, 2) the process, procedure, and example of the success on environmental impact assessment, 3) the management and control of pollution contaminated goods and electronic waste, 4) the exchange of knowledge on waste management between Thailand and Laos, and 5) the capacity building for personnel in terms of management , environmental protection, and solution of nature and food contamination problem to promote safety of consumers and meet international standards.
Besides, the conference attendees also discussed possible ways of collaboration in water resources management, especially in Mekong River area. Regarding the discussion, there may be an exchange of knowledge on tracking and forecasting system for hydrological data of the Mekong River in Laos to provide information that is helpful for management. Also, the system can give notice to Thai people when there are disaster alerts to reduce loss and damage, for example, developing an application that can share and forecast information. Regarding this collaboration, the Department of Water Resources of Thailand and Laos have been assigned to discuss it in more detail.
In the end, there was a gift exchange and group photoshoot. The conference was successful and ended with friendliness.
