MNRE Hosts the 4th International Conference Against Illegal Trafficking of Wildlife and Wild Plants

 

Today (September 13, 2017), the Department of National Parks, Wildlife, Plant Conservation under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, as the official host, held the 4th International Conference Against Illegal Trafficking of Wildlife and Wild Plants.

The conference was held with purposes of countering the illegal trafficking of wildlife and wild plants, acknowledging the progress of solving the problem, strengthening the collaboration among the relating organizations, and discussing and exchanging information in the level of ASEAN and China to create guidelines for solving illegal trafficking of wildlife and wild plants more effectively.

        Thailand has realized the seriousness of the illegal trafficking of wildlife and wild plants problem which widely occurs in the south-east Asia region. Particularly, this region is a passage of delivering wild plants and animals such as pangolins, tigers, turtles, Siamese rosewoods, tusks, rhino horns, and so on.

On this occasion, it was an honor to have Gen. Surasak Karnjanarat, the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment in the meeting as the Chairman at the opening ceremony. Besides, Mr. Thanya Netithammakun,  the Director-General of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation, the leader of the representatives from Thailand together with representatives from ASEAN countries including China (10 countries) and 120 international organizations, participated in the conference and presented the results of solving the illegal trafficking of wildlife and wild plants problem.

In addition, they also had subgroup meetings and discussion forums to exchange knowledge, present solutions to the problem, and report the results of how the problem of illegal trafficking of wildlife and wild plants has been solved.

Also, there were several alliances that supported the event and assisted with the coordination in creating the conference. These alliances included IUCN, Freeland, FAO, USAID Wildlife Asia, TRAFFIC, WCS, WWF, UNODC, INTERPOL, WCO, CITES Secretariat, EIA, APA, UNDP, AEG, INL, and USFWS. The conference was successfully held at the Miracle Grand Convention Hotel, Bangkok.
