"Varawut" joined the speech at the GCNT Forum 2022 the Power Collaboration of the Business Sector to Lead Thailand towards a Carbon  Neutrality Society

Today (November 2nd, 2022) at 11:00 a.m. Mr. Varawut Silpa-archa, the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, together with Mr. Jatuporn Buruspat, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment participated in the annual sustainability leaders GCNT Forum 2022 under the concept of Accelerating Business Solutions to Tackle Climate & Biodiversity Challenges organized by the Global Compact Network Thailand or GCNT along with the United Nations, Thailand and other organizations of more than 110 member organizations, both Thai and foreign, have joined forces to increase measures to deal with the crisis from climate change and biodiversity, with General Prayut Chan-o-cha, the Prime Minister, presided over the opening ceremony at the United Nations Convention Center.

 At the meeting, the Prime Minister gave a keynote address on the topic  “Speed up to Find Solutions for the Business Sector to Solve Global Problems, Climate Change and Biodiversity Crisis”, considering the private sector and the United Nations as key partners in driving sustainable economic, social and environmental development of Thailand. It will lead to concrete cooperation in the region as well as push for the use of the BCG concept to promote cooperation in various fields, such as the restoration of sustainable tourism, forest management with technology, and modern innovations that add value and generate income for local people in the meantime also improving the quality of life and good economic opportunities. The essential element is to drive all sectors to have the ability to change their operating approaches in Thailand to build a network and strong foundation, and jointly declare their intention to deal with climate change and protect nature in a concrete, measurable, and scalable manner.

Mr. Varawut then gave a speech about Thailand's approach to dealing with climate change, stating that Thailand is at the ninth risk of being severely affected by climate change in the world, and requires immediate improvement through a "Long-term strategy for the development of Thailand's low greenhouse gas emissions" or LT-LEDS that all sectors must cooperate and further push forward. Currently, it is still in the preparation of participation goals set by the member countries, revised 2nd edition (The 2nd updated NDC) with the goal to increase greenhouse gas emission reduction target by 40% by 2030. Moreover, there are guidelines and measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, such as increasing the share of renewable energy (RE) and energy efficiency and promoting the use of electric vehicles (EV) through the cooperation of all sectors. The coming COP27 meeting between November 3rd-18th, 2022 will be held in Sharm El Sheikh, the Arab Republic of Egypt. He will represent Thailand to attend the presentation of Thailand's achievements in implementing Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement to display the potential and reassure readiness to lead Thailand towards sustainable carbon neutrality country towards the global community once again.
