Prime Minister received a certificate from UNESCO certifying Korat Geo Park as the second-world geopark of Thailand. MNRE is delighted to combine 3 World Heritage Sites in one province.

On June 6, 2023 at 8:30 a.m., Mr. Varawut Silpa-archa, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment (Minister of Foreign Affairs), as chairman of the National Committee on Geoparks, along with Mr. Jatuporn Buruspat, Permanent Secretary Ministry Mrs. Oranuch Lopensri, Director-General of the Department of Mineral Resources led a delegation of the Korat Geopark and the owner of the area, led by Mr. Sayam Sirimongkol, Governor of Nakhon Ratchasima Province Received a certificate of approval for the Korat Geopark as a Global Geopark from General Prayut Chan-o-cha, Prime Minister, as a representative of Thailand. Received a certificate from Mr. Libing Wang, representative of UNESCO Thailand Office and on this occasion, Mr. Varawut also gave a congratulatory speech to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Adisorn Naowanont, President of Nakhon Ratchasima Rajabhat University and Prof. Dr. Pratuang Jintaskul, Director of Korat Geopark, at Santi Maitri Building government house

In which, the Prime Minister expressed his gratitude to all stakeholders who have cooperated in pushing for and implementing the Khorat Geopark to be certified as the second UNESCO World Geopark in Thailand, which will make Thailand the world’s largest geopark. It is known to tourists from all over the world Both in terms of natural resources that are still abundant and is a valuable source of geological learning and to help publicize it to be known both domestically and internationally.

Mr. Varawut said that the Korat Geopark was certified as a global geopark this time, making Nakhon Ratchasima Province of Thailand a province with 3 UNESCO certified areas in one province, such the Sakaerat Biosphere Reserve area which was certified in 1976, The Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Group World Heritage Area was certified in 2005 and the Korat Geopark Global Geopark area was certified in 2023. “Korat Geopark” is outstanding in terms of Questa-style topography which is 1,700 kilometers long. There are 10 ancient elephant fossils found in most genera. It is also the source of more than 1,000 fossils of dinosaurs and 4 new dinosaur species of the world.
