MNRE prepares Thai attitudes at the 34th ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Environment (34th ASOEN)
Today (July 11, 2023) at 1:30 p.m. Mr. Thaloengsak Petchsuwan, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, chaired the Thai Posture Preparatory Meeting for the 34th ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Environment (34th ASOEN) and other related meetings at meeting room 301, Department of Environmental Quality Promotion. It is to discuss Thailand's stance on attending the 34th ASOEN meeting and the meeting between ASEAN and Dialogue Partners to be held from 31 July to 4 August 2023 in Bogor, Republic of Indonesia. It is to meet and discuss cooperation in seven major areas, namely nature and biodiversity conservation, marine and coastal environment, water resources management, sustainable urban environment, climate change, chemical and waste management and environmental studies, sustainable consumption and production, as well as the implementation of various ASEAN agreements.
The meeting considered key documents to be adopted at the meeting, such as the draft ASEAN Joint Statement on Climate Change for the ASEAN Joint Statement on Climate Change to UNFCCC COP28 for the ASEAN Action Plan on Invasive Alien Species: IAS. It includes the nomination of schools and recipients for the 4th ASEAN Eco - Schools Award and the 2nd ASEAN Youth Eco - Champions Award. Proposal of two protected areas for inclusion as an ASEAN Heritage Park in 2023 are: Phu Khieo Wildlife Sanctuary and Nam Nao National Parks and Phu Kradueng National Parks, including issues pushed by the Republic of Indonesia as ASEAN Chair in 2023 and the progress of the 17th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Environment in August 2023 in Lao PDR.
The deputy MNRE requested each agency to consider proposing issues that the agency has the potential and interest in pushing forward cooperation on environment and climate change among ASEAN member countries. He also noted that finding ways to operate cooperation under the ASEAN framework on the environment may have to consider ways to enhance strategic cooperation in which ASEAN will set a policy or create common standards on the environment. Each country can operate at different levels according to their respective contexts and will continue to develop towards a stronger common standard.
