MNRE’s Permanent Secretary Jatuporn Highlights Forest Sector's Crucial Role in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals at UNFF19 Session
On May 9, 2024, at the United Nations headquarters in New York City, United States, Mr. Jatuporn Buruspat, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, as the head of the Thai delegation, participated in the High-Level Segment (HLS) of the UNFF19 (The nineteenth session of the United Nations Forum on Forests). He delivered a statement underscoring the significance of the forest sector for sustainable development goals in terms of economy, society, and environment. He highlighted the collaboration of all sectors in efforts to prevent forest loss and degradation, carbon sequestration from forests to address climate change issues, and biodiversity conservation. Emphasis was placed on sustainable forest management knowledge and the benefits derived from forests in the form of carbon credits.
The Thai delegation included representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Office of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the Department of Forestry, the Department of National Parks, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation, the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, and the Department of Climate Change and Environment. The meeting reiterated Thailand's commitment to actively participate in forest cooperation with international partners to achieve sustainable development goals. In addition, the session provided Thailand an opportunity to present its strategies and policies on forests and climate change, as well as its forest management efforts, to UNFF members. This participation aimed to establish networks and cooperation and garner support for sustainable forest management-related activities. Moreover, regarding the auspicious occasion of His Majesty's 72nd Birthday Anniversary, the Thai government has initiated Planting 7.2 Million Trees, the restoring forests project to increase forest and green areas nationwide.
