Phatcharavat and MNRE’s Permanent Secretary Discuss Flood Response Plans  and Strategies to Aid Victims with Prime Minister

Today (June 20, 2024) at 10:30 a.m., Pol. Gen. Phatcharavat Wongsuwan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, along with Mr. Jatuporn Buruspat, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, and heads of relevant government agencies under the ministry, attended a meeting to assess the situation, prepare for the water situation, and consider ways to assist people affected by the water crisis. The meeting was held at the Cabinet reception room, Parliament Building, and chaired by Mr. Srettha Thavisin, the Prime Minister.

Mr. Jatuporn reported the flood mitigation action plan of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) for 2024-2025, divided into three parts. The first part, preparation before the event, includes surveying risk areas, closely monitoring them, establishing a front-line water management center, and preparing personnel, equipment, reservoirs, and warning stations in high-risk areas. In the event of heavy rainfall, which often accompanies landslides, these preparations are crucial. The second part, preparation during the event, involves setting up coordination centers of the ministry in all provinces and preparing equipment, tools, and water distribution points to provide drinking water and necessary supplies to address immediate problems during the crisis. The third part, preparation after the event, includes drills and readiness in terms of personnel, equipment, and water source development. Post-crisis often sees issues with water quality. In case of low water levels, the Department of Groundwater Resources under the MNRE is prepared to assist the public through various projects, including royal tribute projects, to alleviate the hardship of those affected by drought.

The Prime Minister has issued a policy on handling the water situation, stating that the issues of flooding and drought are national priorities that require careful long-term planning. The focus is on unified collaboration among all agencies. All agencies are instructed to prepare for water situations and enhance the capacity and efficiency of water sources, economic areas, and urban communities. In case of flooding, there must be readiness in terms of boats and medical supplies. An integrated plan involving all sectors should be developed, including rapid water drainage plans with clear timelines and quality indicators. The government is fully prepared to provide support.
