Dr. Chalermchai Opens TCAC 2024, Calls for Accelerating the Climate Transition and Uniting Partnerships for Climate-Friendly Society

On October 3, 2024, at 2:00 p.m., Dr. Chalermchai Sri-on, Minister of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE), presided over the opening ceremony of the 3rd Thailand Climate Action Conference (TCAC 2024) under the theme "Accelerating the Climate Transition and Uniting Partnerships for Climate-Friendly Society.” The event was held during the Sustainability Expo 2024, which took place from October 3-4  at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center in Bangkok. Dr. Chalermchai also awarded honorary plaques to 16 organizations supporting TCAC 2024. The event was attended by Mr. Jatuporn Buruspat, MNRE’s Permanent Secretary, government officials, cabinet members, parliamentarians, ambassadors, international organizations, public and private sector leaders, and provincial governors, who toured the exhibitions at the Sustainability Expo 2024.

          In his opening remarks, Dr. Chalermchai emphasized Thailand's role as a party to the UNFCCC, fulfilling both domestic and international climate obligations. Thailand has committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2065, with a target of reducing emissions by 40% from the normal case by 2030. The MNRE has outlined climate action plans in cooperation with other ministries, including a national action plan to reduce greenhouse gases. Furthermore, provinces have been tasked with preparing emissions inventories, climate risk assessments, and adaptation plans at the local level. Climate change and biodiversity coordination centers have been established in all 76 provinces to serve as communication hubs, raising awareness and understanding among all sectors at the provincial level. Dr. Chalermchai expressed hope that TCAC 2024 will inspire and pass on the determination to address climate change, as achieving national targets requires continuous action and collaboration from everyone to preserve the planet for future generations.
