Dr. Chalermchai and Moo Deng at COP 29: Showcasing Thai Initiatives in Tackling Global Warming at the Thailand Pavilion
On November 10, 2024, Dr. Chalermchai Sri-on, Minister of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE), announced that Thailand ratified the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change on December 28, 1994, becoming a party to the Convention. Later, Thailand ratified the Kyoto Protocol on August 28, 2002, and the Paris Agreement on September 21, 2016. As a party to the Framework Convention, Thailand has consistently participated in meetings and fulfilled its obligations. This year, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 29) and related meetings are being held from November 9-22, 2024, in Baku, Azerbaijan. Thailand aims to demonstrate its climate change initiatives, pushing toward carbon neutrality by 2050 and achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2065.
Dr. Chalermchai continued, stating that in addition to participating in COP 29 and related meetings, Thailand is showcasing advancements at the Thailand Pavilion in collaboration with public and private partners. This includes presentations on Climate Policy, Climate Technology, Climate Action, and Climate Finance, as well as a Technology and Innovation Zone that highlights private-sector innovations in reducing and capturing carbon emissions. Parallel events at the pavilion will provide platforms for discussions on over 30 topics, such as youth participation in climate action, the green economy, carbon reduction technologies, and climate adaptation, with participants including academics, youth representatives, government officials, NGOs, and international organizations.
Visitors to the Thailand Pavilion this year can also enjoy a special meet-and-greet with "Moo Deng," a beloved pygmy hippo from Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi Province. Attendees can take commemorative photos with Moo Deng and follow the pavilion's daily events through live broadcasts on the Climate Change and Environment Department’s Facebook page from November 11-22, 2024.
