Dr. Raweewan Bhuridej, Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, welcomed Mr. Doi Kentaro, Vice-Minister for Global Environmental Affairs of the Ministry of the Environment of Japan, and his delegation, to discuss approaches for promoting climate change cooperation between Thailand and Japan at the 17th-floor meeting room, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.
On this occasion, Dr. Raweewan Bhuridej stated that Thailand attaches great importance to climate change operations and expressed gratitude to the Government of Japan for supporting and jointly driving cooperation under the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM). The JCM serves as a vital mechanism for promoting greenhouse gas emission reductions, technology transfer, and environmental investment, which will support both countries in achieving their greenhouse gas reduction targets. The representative of the Japanese Government reaffirmed the close relationship between Thailand and Japan and expressed commitment to elevating environmental cooperation, particularly in pushing forward climate change response measures, which have now entered the phase of serious implementation. This includes driving the Green Transformation (GX) policy to support the transition toward a low-carbon society.
Concurrently, the Japanese side placed emphasis on expanding cooperation through the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM), which is a key mechanism for international greenhouse gas emission reductions. He highlighted the Thailand–Japan cooperation as a successful model. Japan stands ready to build upon this through the development of climate technologies, such as Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) and Green Hydrogen.
Furthermore, the Thai side viewed that cooperation under the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) should align with the country's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. The meeting also discussed approaches to extend the duration of the Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) to accommodate the implementation of new long-term projects and technologies in the future, reaffirming the shared intent to continue the strategic partnership and jointly drive cooperation on climate change and sustainable development to create mutual benefits for both nations toward sustainable development.
