MNRE Permanent Secretary Attends CBD COP17 Presidency Event to Advance Biodiversity Finance Mechanisms

Mr. Suchart Chomklin, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, assigned Ms. Raweewan Bhuridej, Ph. D., Permanent Secretary of the Ministry and head of the Thai delegation, together with Mr. Bannaruk Sermthong, Secretary-General of the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning (ONEP), Mr. Tanit Changthavorn, Ph. D., Director of the Biodiversity-Based Economy Development Office, and ministry executives and officials, to attend the Presidency Event, a ministerial-level discussion involving the International Advisory Panel on Biodiversity Credits (IAPB), during CBD COP17 on October 26, 2026, in Yerevan, Armenia. The event aimed to advance innovative financial mechanisms for biodiversity conservation and restoration. Initiated by the governments of France and the United Kingdom, the IAPB seeks to develop frameworks and standards for credible and transparent biodiversity credit markets that deliver positive outcomes for nature while respecting community rights and ensuring the equitable sharing of benefits with communities responsible for managing natural resources. Thailand also participated in the IAPB Policy Forum through ONEP and the Biodiversity-Based Economy Development Office (Public Organization), with plans to initiate implementation in the pilot area of the Doi Tung Development Project under the Mae Fah Luang Foundation under Royal Patronage. These efforts align with Thailand's National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) for 2023–2027 and support Target 19 on resource mobilization under the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Thailand places particular emphasis on credible biodiversity credit standards, verifiable outcomes, and approaches suited to the country's ecological conditions and national context. The aim is to establish innovative financial mechanisms that complement public funding for biodiversity conservation while exploring opportunities to implement pilot projects with interested private-sector partners, including the Mae Fah Luang Foundation under Royal Patronage, to generate additional income for farmers through local biodiversity conservation.
